New medicine - literally a load of crap

There are between 2.4 and 3.5 million annual physician visits for IBS in the United States alone

If you or someone you know suffers from a bowel condition, and can't get relief from anything you've tried, Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT), or 'Stool Transplant' may be just the thing! And yes, it is exactly what the name suggests - a treatment involving the transplant of someone else's poo into your own colon! It is extremely effective in the treatment of a particular bacterial infection caused by antibiotic use (overgrowth of Clostridium difficile can be cured with just a single treatment), and the therapy is currently being clinically trialled for the treatment of Ulcerative Colitis - which seems to respond really well but requires multiple treatments. There are many other therapeutic possibilities being explored, including the treatment of constipation, diarrhoea, colitis, IBS, & some auto-immune conditions. Even things like diabetes, autism, obesity & metabolic syndrome, & some neurological conditions such as Parkinson's Disease & Multiple Sclerosis are being looked into as possibly benefiting from a little 'bacteria sharing!' Before you all race into the Dr's asking for a poo infusion, you may consider waiting until the enteric-coated capsule delivery method becomes available - currently your options include an enema, or nasogastric/duodenal tube infusion of stool from a healthy donor. Hmmm.

Traditional Chinese medicine years ahead of modern medicine

MD000695 Like many of our supposed modern medical breakthroughs, it seems that the Chinese have been onto this 'poo therapy' for thousands of years - back in the days before medicine as we know it existed, patients would be cured by drinking 'yellow water' (fecal matter mixed with water). Now the nasogastric tube option is beginning to sound more attractive.... When you think about it, this form of therapy really makes so much sense - it is like forest regeneration, using the correct balance of ideally suited plants, trees and other organisms to recreate a healthy, functional ecosystem after the forest has been destroyed by something. Some of our digestive bacterial populations are completely unbalanced and dysfunctional, due to things like alcohol, antibiotics, drugs and medications, poor food choices, chlorinated drinking water, chemical residues from non-organic food, travelling to wonderful places and picking up not so wonderful stow-aways....even being delivered via Caesarian as a baby and not getting enough breastmilk can start us off on the wrong foot. So a 'healthy poo infusion' into an unhealthy colon is almost like a beautiful, balanced, forest ecosystem which has everything working in harmony, being introduced into an unbalanced and unharmonious ecosystem - like a natural forest creeping back into neighboring abandoned farmland. Although the treatment makes really good sense, it is not yet widely used - possibly because there isn't any money to be made from it as far as drug companies are concerned. And potentially a great deal of money to be lost, as patients start to treat themselves effectively with just a free 'healthy poo donation'' (perhaps you could charge for supplying exceptional quality specimens) instead of their current long list of medications.
